NBBJ won a competition for the Stanford University School of Medicine, to do several projects. The first was a master plan to integrate existing and future buildings in a holistic way along two major axes. The second was to build a new underground loading dock and tunnel system, and to move a lot of infrastructure. The third was to design the Learning and Knowledge Center, which is a multipurpose academic building that functions as the front door to the school of medicine. The building has a different function on each of four floors. In the basement is a medical simulation suite, which is an artificial hospital where students can do realistic training with actors and sophisticated mannequins. The ground floor has a cafe and two large case study classrooms. Level two has classrooms and a multipurpose conference hall, which is used for the Grand rounds of the medical students. Level 3 is administration and the office of the dean. Level four is student collaboration space, including a workout gym and terrace under the cantilevered roof.
